We laughed in anticipation as the judges decided on the winner of the 2010 Tim Sims Encouragement Award at last night’s Cream of Comedy showcase. The look on Mike Rita‘s face was worth the wait. Hailing from Bloor and Landsdowne in Toronto, Rita joked about living in a bad neighbourhood, his Mom and smoking weed. His down-to-earth personality and street-smart comedy style won him $5000, a scholarship to the Second City Training Centre and the opportunity to write and star in a comedy short to  air on The Comedy Network.

The other four finalists included Georgea Brook-Hancock, Darryl Orr, Marco Bernardi and the sketch troupe Big Tease. All of them are awesome performers and will no doubt go on to do great things. We’ll be keeping an eye on them all in the future.

Stay tuned for next year’s Cream of Comedy event — it’s a fun night out for a funny cause in memory of comedian, writer, director and charity fundraiser Tim Sims.
